Tenants from Innisfree Housing Association visited Westminster and helped win the battle over complaints at the House of Lords.

Watch the movie below of Innisfree tenants Des Browne, Margaret Carroll and Bernadette Gallagher with Natalie McGregor, a National Housing Federaton Staff member, meeting Peers Baroness Hayter and Lord McKenzie to discuss their objection to a measure in the Localism Bill which would have removed tenants right to complain to the Housing Ombudsman.

New Connections for Innisfree

Innisfree tenants Anne Bray and Julie Horgan get online

Innisfree has been given a prestigious “Awards for All” grant of £7,128 from the Big Lottery Fund to spend on a creative arts project at our two shared supported houses in Ealing.

The project called ‘New Connections’, will involve photographer Anthony Luvera working with our tenants to take and edit photographs based around their interests, resulting in an exhibition and a publication next year.

We will also use the grant to install a computer and provide internet access at Maldon Road enabling tenants to keep in touch with their friends and family and learn to use online services.

Practical tuition in IT skills will be tailored to the individual needs of those taking part to encourage socialisation and to build a sense of community.

Our supported housing staff are aiming to use the internet with all their tenants to combat social and financial exclusion amongst those who are living in supported accommodation.

“I will be using IT in my support sessions with one tenant who needs to set up proper income and expenditure spreadsheets to manage his self-employment” says Kathy McDonald.

Irish Housing Minister, Michael Finneran, visited Innisfree on 10th February. He was accompanied by John O’Connor, Chief Executive of Ireland’s Housing & Sustainable Communities Agency.

They were impressed with the work Innisfree is doing, especially with vulnerable single tenants.

Residents at Clochar Court, our sheltered scheme in Harlesden, laid on a welcome reception for them.

The Minister also met Sarah Keogh, our green-fingered tenant at Innisfree House. Sarah has looked after the garden there for twenty years and it’s the pride of the Mapesbury Residents’ Association.

The Minister was keen to look at ways in which the Irish government can give more support to vulnerable Irish people living in the UK.

Irish Census Campaign Action

Added: 2010-12-12

The Irish community in Britain is running a national campaign to encourage as many Irish and people of Irish decent to register their Irish ethnicity in the upcoming Census, taking place on the 27th March 2011. We are doing this to combat underrepresentation of the Irish in official figures.

You can play a critical role in making this happen. For the moment we are building up a database of supporters who identify with their Irish roots. We are calling on you to sign up too. This will give the campaign the right support it needs to be the success we all want it to be.

Please help by joining the campaign and find out more about it at www.howirishareyou.com
